I planned to carry out two photo-shoots within a studio and
location setting for aesthetic theme which is based on (The Godfather). My
studio shoot included a wide range of lighting techniques, particularly shadows.
Unfortunately, I was unable to complete my location shoot, due to problems with
my model.
Also, I completed two other photo-shoots within the studio
and on location in Bradford, the aim of this was to experiment with lighting
and positions. I found these photo-shoots very helpful as it enabled me to
create my own style of images in a trial and error method.
The cinematographer who inspired me to create images based
on (The Godfather) is (Gordon Willis). I envied the way in which he used
shadows to hide parts of an image, for example he would hide one half of a
models face and he would give his models dark eye bags to portray them as being
dark and evil. I also used this technique and I found it very useful when
creating hard light images.
First photo-shoot – studio
My project is based on: (The Godfather), I purchased a
Trilby hat and Cigar along with a formal dress code to recreate a 1930s
Prohibition gangster appearance. The main
lighting technique which was crucial to my style was shadows, I wanted to reproduce
the shadow effect that (Gordon Willis) uses within his images, for example the
Shadows he creates on his subjects eyes to create an evil and cold blooded
style. I had an hour in the studio to create my images, my overall photo-shoot
was a success because I had created images with hard lighting techniques which
in turn emulated an evil and mysterious feel.
Second photo- shoot – location – Saltaire
I planned to carry out my location shoot within Saltaire, because
it contains Cobbled streets and Victorian era buildings. I chose the same dress
code the only change would have been a comb back hairstyle because this hairstyle
was popular during the 1920s to 1950s. Unfortunately I was unable to carry out
my shoot because of problems arranging a time and also problems with my model
not turning up to photo-shoots, because I left the location shoot to the last
week I was unable find other models to work with me in time for the deadline.
Improvements
If I could improve my project, I would improve my time management
skills. I postponed vital parts of my project to the last few weeks which left
me with little time to re-think and re-arrange models for a third location shoot.
