Incident light - this reading is taken from the light which
is falling onto the subject e.g. from camera flash, soft boxes and snoots.
Reflective light –
this reading is taken from the light that is reflected off of models
Every time you capture an image your camera is you are
making two exposures simultaneously, you are making an exposure of ambient
light and flash’s light. Ambient light is controlled by the f/stop and shutter
speed you choose while flash is controlled by the aperture. The meter within
your camera cannot read the flash but all handheld light meters can meter for
both ambient and flash readings.
To meter for flash you must connect a tethered flash sync
cord to your Light reader and soft box or via a wireless remote trigger. You
must place your light meter directly in front of the subject and press the
measuring button, the flash lighting within the studio should fire and the
light meter will them produce an accurate light reading.
