High key lighting – is a modern lighting technique which
eliminates black areas and shadows. Mid tone greys and bright white colours are
associated with high key images, white props, pale backgrounds and bright lighting
are used to create the overall effect.
Low key lighting – is the complete opposite style to high
key lighting, it contains dark colour tones and shadows, it is used in horror
genres, and also it allows artists to hide areas of the image using shadows.
Reduced lighting and dark coloured props are used to create low key images.
Rick
Nun
This portrait has a cool and relaxed vibe linked to it, the
props and pose suggest he is a school boy who is laid back and confident, the
frown is telling me that he thinks he is better than everyone else. The white
shirt creates a strong contrast but it is not dramatic it still retains a soft
and mellow feel. The texture is very smooth; the shadow covering the right side
of his body suggests that the snoot was placed on the left side pointing
directly at him from an angle. The majority of the image contains a black fill
which pulls me towards the image the emptiness then forces me to direct my
attention towards the model. Overall this image has a calming effect on me it
is not overwhelming but rather it is balanced and neutral in its contrast.
Rick Berk
This image attracted me because it
looks like it was taken for a horror movie; her facial expression and eye
contact suggest she has malice intentions. She is wearing dark eye linger this
small detail adds to the low key lighting it harmonises with the background.
The red lipstick and blonde wavy hair add a classical feel to the image.
Sean Mc Grath
I chose this portrait because it has a retro style
associated with it, it represents rock stars from the 1980s, the denim jacket
and scruffy hair is telling me that the model is trying to show that he wants
to be different from normal. The texture on his hair is course and thick, he is
looking towards the floor this may reflect that he is reclusive or upset. The
artist shot this image at an angle this makes the portrait appear flat he could
have shot it underneath the model which would give the viewer more to
contemplate over and it would have played on scale.
Sayla Marz
This image resembles a robotic theme because every inch of
the background including the makeover contains a metallic effect. Furthermore
she has no emotion and her eyes are wide open this again withholds any human
like behaviour.
I will use a Low Key Lighting effect throughout my final
shoot because it best describes the characters that I will resemble. The
Godfather Is associated with crime to reflect this evil I will shoot with
shadows and dark coloured props.
Soft box – is an enclosed around a bulb compromised of a
reflective sides and back wall with a diffuser material at the front, it is
used to eradicate shadows and to create an even light tone throughout an image.
Beauty dish – is a flat circular reflective surface which
directs light towards the focal point of an image to give a dramatic and
surreal effect e.g. gold beauty dish can be used to give a model a golden
tanned look.
Standard reflector dish – is silver coloured and curved
around bulbs to give a dramatic effect to images, it allows artists to direct
light to certain areas to create effects like shadows.
Snoot –is a flash accessory which connects to a hot shoe via
a sync cord, it is narrow in shape this allows artists to direct light onto
specific areas of an image without exposing any surroundings. Also you can
change the strength of light to create bright and soft images.
Hard light – is created
by a narrow or small light source which is positioned at a distance, a snoot is
used to make hard light images, main uses for hard light is to create shadows
and strong contrasts.
This is an example of hard lighting, it contains shadows and
different shades of light throughout, I like the lines produced by the shadows
it cuts her face into two sections. The shadows also add a soft tone. The hard
light has brought out different shades of colour in the models hair this
variation creates detail it makes the image more interesting. Morover hard
light forces out the contrast within an image but it can overwhelming.
Soft light – Is created by a large light source at a close distance, soft boxes are used to create soft images, and its main uses are to iliumuniate the whole image and to create a balanced tone.
This image is a great example of Soft light because it
contains no shadows or colour variations, it is balanced and neutral, the
colours have a consistent intensity. The light has reflected off every inch of
the set this helps create an overall balanced colour tone.
This image contains harmonising colour tones, to achieve
this effect without any dark areas the artist used a soft light source because
dark or dull areas will create contrast, the background is dark this confirms
that she was placed at a distance from the background to create a low depth of
field.
