Programme Model allows the user to select 3 to 4 settings
depending on what kind of camera you use you should be able to select 4
settings Evaluative, Partial, Spot and Centre Weighed. The camera then uses a metering sensor to
evaluate the Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO required to make an exposure.
1 1. Evaluative metering – this evaluated the whole
scene but places greater emphasis on what you are focused on.
2. Partial Metering – this is an alternative to sport metering because it allows you to take a reading from a small area around you focal point.
3. Spot metering - only cover the centre AF point, it offers pin point precision compared to the other metering Programme modes.
4. Centre weighted average – this is similar to Evaluative metering the only difference is it pays more attention to subject within the middle of the frame and it does not use any exposure compensation which means it will use the same averaging throughout the image.
Light boxes were originally used to view film or
transparencies but nowadays they are rarely used because people no longer shoot
with film cameras, light boxes can be used to create still life images because
they create a bright white background to place objects on.
1) Image 5113
I shot this image on a light box; I used a light box to
enhance the artificial light within the room I was shooting in. Evaluative
metering this has allowed me to expose everything within the frame, there are no
dark areas this creates a balanced image.
2
Partial metering evaluates most of the image and some of the
available light this creates a light frame effect around the image it does not
focus on the edges of the frame. The surface of the sweets is dark this is
because the only light source is the light box I did not use flash.
3
Spot metering allows the photographer to focus on the most
important area of the image; it creates a dark halo around the subject for
example in this image you can see a dark glow around the sweets. Spot metering
is perfect for still life shots when focusing on a piece of jewellery or food. I also used a high angle this enabled me
to capture the detail on the packaging.
4
Centre weighted average is used to create a balanced image,
it evaluates all light sources and takes an average from each source you can
see this image is clearer than the rest. I used smarties to add a circular pattern it
also contains many different colours which attract the viewers’ attention.
Natural light
1) Image 5084
I captured these biscuits near a window to capture the
natural light, leading lines inspired me to shoot at a landscape format because
it enables me to include more of the background, leading lines also guide
the viewer from one side of the image to the other. Majority of this image is white and the
biscuits harmonize with the background this creates a soft image that makes the
viewer feel relaxed and calm. The biscuit contains shapes this adds a pattern
effect which makes the image more interesting, furthermore I used a shallow
depth of field on the edges to add more emphasise to the focal point.
2
The main compositional technique within this image is
leading lines it acts as guide directing the viewer towards the focal point, partial
metering has made a difference, I cannot see darkened areas around the edges.
3
Spot metering has allowed me to focus directly on the biscuits
it has also created a shallow depth of field. The position I shot in was perfect there was
plenty of light coming through to brighten the image.
4
Centre weighted average is similar to Evaluative metering
but it takes an average from every light source within the room including
natural and artificial light this allows the photographer to create a sharper
and clearer image.
Night time
1) Image 5226
Night time Photography is very unique because it reflects a
surreal and dream like effect, you will rely on artificial light this will
enable you to create complex shadows and shapes. The main compositional
technique is shadows I used a table lamp as a light source, the candles add a
glow effect, the pattern effect on the plate adds a strong eye catching
contrast. Moreover the pastry contains lines this again adds to the overall
pattern effect this makes the image more enjoyable.
2
When capturing this image I could have decreased the aperture to give me a shallower depth of field this will add more importance to the focal point rather than the background because I think this image contains unwanted details like the wall that can be seen in the top left corner.
3
I used spot metering to capture this image; you can see the
apple turnover appears lighter than the rest of the frame. Sport metering has
brought out the texture and tone in the apple turnover for example it enhances
the gold and white colours and you can also get an idea of what the texture
feels like because of the detail.
